From engraver and publisher Johann Theodor de Bry (1561-1623), after Nicolaas Braeu, after Flemish painter Karel van Mander (1548-1606), 1596. Title: [The epicurians celebrate this rite from a herd of swine]. From: Emblemata Saecularia [Secular emblems], 1596. A drunken young man lies vomiting in a ditch. He is held by his buddy, who points to two men carrying away a large barrel of beer in the background. Two sober barrel carriers are able to carry a full barrel of beer, while a drunkard cannot tolerate anything (anymore). The moral: beware of intemperate drinking with all the bad consequences that entails. Emblem No. 14 in Emblemata Saecularia (1596) and no. 35 in the second edition (1611).
