This photograph depicts a lateral view of a 7-months pregnant woman’s torso. Note the maculopapular eruptions on her abdomen, which were determined to be due to a secondary syphilis infection caused by the bacterial spirochete, Treponema pallidum. A pregnant mother infected with the T. pallidum bacterium can transfer the infection to her unborn child, causing congenital syphilis.
