Cocaine-induced cerebral infarction in newborn (CT)

Head CT scan of 1-day-old infant exposed to cocaine in utero. CT reveals a large area of low attenuation in the distribution of the left middle cerebral artery; signal characteristics are suggestive of acute ischemic stroke. The radiographic data suggest that stroke occurred within previous 72 hours, which coincides with mother’s cocaine use. (Contributed by Dr. Daniel Bonthius.)
