The Green Door, Prohibition Speakeasy in Chicago

Built in 1872, The Green Door is the oldest tavern in Chicago. A speakeasy opened in the basement in 1921, shortly after the start of Prohibition in 1920. The entrance to the speakeasy was a green door, which, during Prohibition, signified that it was a place serving illegal alcohol. The leader of the North Side Gang, Dean O'Banion (1892-1924), provided the booze. The North Side Gang, also known as the North Side Mob, was the dominant Irish-American criminal organization in Chicago during the bootlegging wars from the early 1920s to the mid-1930s and the principal rival of the Italian-American organization known as the Chicago Outfit run by Johnny Torrio (1882-1957) and later his protege, Al Capone (1899-1947).
