Linear accelerator

Schematic of a typical linear accelerator (LINAC) for radiation therapy that can be adapted for stereotactic radiosurgery. The gantry rotates as the radiation is delivered, thus, limiting the exposure to tissues other than the target. As with the Gamma Knife, the patient’s head is fixed with a stereotactic frame, and treatment is limited to cranial and upper cervical lesions. (Contributed by Dr. Russell Andrews.)
