Oligodendrocyte in various stages of "foamy" modification with formation of intracellular vacuoles (Alcian blue/PAS stain)

The cytoplasm of these cells and the white matter around them stains positive for Alcian blue, suggesting the abnormal excess of proteoglycans in childhood ataxia with central nervous system hypomyelination. (Contributed by Dr. Raphael Schiffmann.)
