Subcortical band heterotopia (gross specimen from an adult patient)

The pathological abnormality in subcortical band heterotopia is characterized by two layers of gray matter (arrows). The outer cortex appears normal, grossly and microscopically. A subcortical heterotopic layer of neurons in the subcortical white matter (inner arrow) does not extend into the gyri of the outer cortex. (Contributed by Dr. Joseph Gleeson.)
