Cell penetration of the blood-brain barrier

Penetration of the blood-brain barrier is a 2-step process. First, emperipolesis through endothelial cells (blocked by natalizumab and possibly interferon) or penetration through the tight junctions after digestion by matrix metalloproteases (likely blocked by interferons). Second, breach of the basement membrane after digestion by matrix metalloproteases (likely blocked by interferons). (Contributed by Dr. Anthony Reder.)
