Melanocytoma can be considered a subset of choroidal (uveal track) nevus. They arise out of the optic nerve and can obscure the view of the nerve when they are large. They are dark brown to jet-black. They are typically relatively stationery lesions but have been shown to exhibit some enlargement in 10% to 15% of cases and can cause minor visual loss.
