Sleep-related movement disorders are classically defined as stereotyped movements that occur during sleep or in the transition from wakefulness to sleep. Restless legs syndrome is the exception to this definition as the compensatory movements are often nonstereotyped. The ICSD-3 recognizes 7 broad categories of sleep disorders: insomnia, sleep-related breathing disorders, central disorders of hypersomnolence, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, parasomnias, sleep-related movement disorders, and other sleep disorders.
