Vulnerability of periventricular region to LCMV infection

The periventricular region is selectively vulnerable to LCMV infection and pathology in the human fetus and in the developing rat. [A] This head CT scan from an infant with congenital LCMV infection reveals microencephaly and periventricular calcifications (arrows). [B] Fifty-micrometer-thick horizontal section through a 49-day-old rat brain immunohistochemically stained for LCMV. The rat was inoculated as a neonate with LCMV.
