About 80% of patients with rabies develop an encephalitic form and 20% develop a paralytic form. The encephalitic form includes episodes of generalized arousal or hyperexcitability, aggressive behavior, confusion, hallucinations, fever and autonomic dysfunction. Hydrophobia is also a characteristic manifestation of rabies. The disease can be effectively prevented after a recognized exposure, but is almost invariably fatal once clinical disease develops.

The retinopathies and choroidopathies are a group of eye conditions that can cause central and peripheral visual loss, fundus changes, and electrophysiologic changes. Key signs of retinal disease are positive photostress test, minimal Marcus Gunn pupil in the involved eye, and maculopathies or retinitis pigmentosa on visual field test. Retinal imaging modalities such as optical coherence tomography can help identify retinal disorders and distinguish them from optic nerve disorders.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy is a dose-dependent complication of numerous agents. Reversibility in most instances depends on the degree of axonal loss. Genetic differences or pre-existing neuropathy can increase a patient's susceptibility to such complications, and severity depends on factors such as preexisting neuropathy, medication metabolism, renal or hepatic function for drug clearance, and idiosyncratic reactions.
