Panayiotopoulos syndrome is a common self-limited childhood-related syndrome manifesting with infrequent autonomic seizures that often last for hours (autonomic status epilepticus). Seizures manifest with a wide spectrum of ictal autonomic manifestations, mainly emesis, syncope-like epileptic seizures (ictal syncope), mydriasis, incontinence, and thermoregulatory and cardiorespiratory irregularities. It is frequently unrecognized or misdiagnosed as encephalitis and other nonepileptic or epileptic disorders.

It can lead to an array of clinical symptoms, with up to 22% of patients exhibiting neurologic or psychiatric symptoms, most commonly ataxia and peripheral neuropathy. Rarer complications include epilepsy and myopathy.
