A movement disorder emergency is characterized by an acute onset of abnormal movements or the rapid evolution of any movement disorder. Most movement disorder emergencies evolve over hours to days, prompting the patient to seek immediate medical attention. Prompt recognition of the correct diagnosis and implementation of the appropriate therapy can reduce morbidity and mortality in the management of movement disorder emergencies.

Neuropathic pain is defined as pain initiated or caused by a primary lesion or dysfunction in the nervous system. Central neuropathic pain is associated with CNS lesions, eg, stroke and spinal cord injury. There are several central pain syndromes with different clinical presentations and underlying neurologic abnormalities, eg, central poststroke pain, central pain in Parkinson disease, etc., and prognosis varies according to the primary pathology.
