Repulse of a German gas attack Southeast of Arras (1917)

Photograph shows the July 7, 1917 attack on the outskirts of Arras, a village that has changed hands several times. This last effort of the Germans to take and hold this place was under cover of a gas cloud after the usually heavy bombardment. Fierce hand-to-hand fighting took place, each man fighting to pull away a German's gas mask. Photographer: Underwood & Underwood.
