Prince Wilhelm hiding his left arm behind his back

Prince Wilhelm in 1877 as an 18-year-old student in Kassel. In 1859, Wilhelm suffered an Erb palsy during a difficult breech birth. The deformity affected him throughout his life. As was typical of him, he tried (albeit unsuccessfully) to hide his deformity whenever possible. Here he is hiding his damaged left hand behind his back. (Photograph restored by Dr. Douglas J Lanska.
