MRI of tethered cord

This young patient who has been followed for sacral agenesis and congenital scoliosis was found to have a tethered cord by MRI. Sagittal T1 (A), sagittal T2 (B) and axial T1 (C) images showing the conus medullaris extending as far caudally as to the L5 vertebral level and tethered to the posterior elements. A small syrinx is present within the distal spinal cord best seen on the sagittal T2 weighted images (B). (Contributed by Dr. Diana Gomez-Hassan.)
