Crude and stratified analyses with effect modification: the strength of the association varies by a third variable

In this case, the effect of vitamin D deficiency on the development of multiple sclerosis varies by age of exposure to vitamin D deficiency. Note, however, that effect modification does not necessarily imply causality: effect modification can operate with both causal and noncausal associations. (Contributed by Dr. Douglas J Lanska.)
