Small fiber neuropathy is a polyneuropathy affecting the small unmyelinated and thinly myelinated sensory and autonomic nerve fibers. Symptoms typically include numbness, paresthesias, and neuropathic pain, and sometimes can include symptoms of autonomic dysfunction. Autonomic symptoms and subclinical autonomic dysfunction are common with small fiber neuropathy. Frequently, no cause for small fiber neuropathy is identified, and it is idiopathic.

Serious neurologic complications of vaccination are rare. Unfortunately, many associations between vaccination and putative neurologic complications have been asserted without sufficient objective data to establish a causal relationship. Most patients with vaccine-associated neurologic complications recover fully, although rare poor outcomes are recognized. Reported neurologic complications of vaccination have included headache, postvaccination (“needle-stick”) syncope, febrile seizures, encephalomyelitis, transverse myelitis, meningitis, and polyneuritis.

Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis is a common form of epilepsy that is often progressive with worsening seizures, cognitive function, and depression. The first habitual seizures usually occur in late childhood or early adolescence. The first recognized ictal event might be a bilateral tonic-clonic seizure or a focal seizure with impaired awareness or interaction. Temporal lobe seizures are usually preceded by an aura.
