Narcolepsy (polysomnogram)

Sleep-onset REM during a multiple sleep latency test in a 12-year-old girl with complaints of irresistible daytime sleep episodes. The child is asleep within the first few seconds of the recording. Rapid eye movements along with muscle atonia and low-voltage EEG without spindles, characteristic of REM sleep, are present after 15 seconds of sleep. The child entered REM sleep within the first few minutes of sleep during each of the 5 nap test periods and was diagnosed with narcolepsy. (Contributed by Dr. Michael Aldrich.)
