Basal ganglia network in hemiballism and chorea

In the classic model of basal ganglia function, the subthalamic nucleus provides excitatory glutamatergic drive to the GPi. Increased activity in the GPi inhibits the motor thalamus, with a resulting decrease in cortical activation and inhibition of movement. Reduced activity from the GPi would have the opposite effect, thus, disinhibiting the thalamus. (Contributed by Dr. Rita Tranquilli.)
