Metabolites of coprine inhibit aldehyde dehydrogenase. If alcohol is ingested hours to days later, the affected individual experiences a constellation of symptoms identical to that from drinking alcohol after taking disulfiram: headache, nausea, vomiting, flushing, tachycardia, and, rarely, hypotension.
