Mushroom toxin cycloprop-2-ene carboxylic acid

The mushroom toxin cycloprop-2-ene carboxylic acid, with its highly strained 3-carbon ring structure, has been isolated from the Russula subnigricans Hongo mushroom. Human poisoning with the Russula subnigricans Hongo mushroom is associated with myotoxicity and rhabdomyolysis. This toxin produced fatal rhabdomyolysis in experimental mice so is presumptively the mushroom toxin responsible for rhabdomyolysis in cases of human poisoning with the Russula subnigricans Hongo mushroom.
