Medieval carving of Saint David, sea-sick during his journey to the holy land, as depicted on a misericord in Saint David's Cathedral in the county of Pembrokeshire, near the most westerly point of Wales. A misericord (or mercy seat) is a small wooden structure on the underside of a folding seat in a church which, when the seat is folded up, is intended to support a person in a partially standing position during long periods of prayer.
