RNA fluorescence in a dysplastic gangliocytoma (photomicrograph)

The enlarged neurons in a dysplastic gangliocytoma of a 16-year-old boy show moderately strong RNA fluorescence more characteristic of normal Purkinje cells than of granule cells, which normally display minimal RNA fluorescence. Normal astrocytes and oligodendrocytes show no RNA fluorescence. The RNA demonstrated by this technique is mainly ribosomal. (Acridine orange fluorochrome; x250) (Contributed by Dr. Laura Hair.)
