Sensory ataxic gait with eyes open and closed (posterior view)

Sequential posterior views of a patient with tabes dorsalis and a sensory ataxic gait. With eyes open (top row), the man walks fairly well, but with eyes closed (bottom row) his gait markedly worsens and becomes wide based and overtly ataxic. (Muybridge E. Animal Locomotion: An Electro-Photographic Investigation of Consecutive Phases of Animal Movements, 1872-1885. Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania, 1887.)
