German neurologist Moritz Romberg (1795 to 1893)

In 1851, Romberg described the loss of postural control experienced by patients with tabes dorsalis after closing their eyes or in darkness. Romberg created a clinical test (the Romberg test) that identified patients with impaired proprioception. (Photograph courtesy of the National Library of Medicine.)
