Role of monoamine oxidase in the degradation of norepinephrine

Monoamine oxidase is functionally coupled with either aldehyde dehydrogenase, which oxidizes the toxic aldehyde products of the monoamine oxidase reaction to the corresponding carboxylic acids, or aldehyde reductase, which reduces the toxic products to glycols. In addition, because of the action of an additional enzyme, catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), more than one possible degradation pathway exists. (Image by Mikael Häggström (2010).
