PTH plays a central role in mineral homeostasis

Kidney and bone are the traditional targets of this hormone. When calcium levels in the blood decrease, parathyroid glands release PTH, which promotes calcium mobilization from bone, reabsorption in the kidney, and absorption in the small intestine, via activation of vitamin D. Since PTH receptors have been found in skeletal muscle, it is possible that PTH may also have an effect in that tissue. Legend: PTH, parathyroid hormone. (Source: Romagnoli C, Brandi ML.
