Nasal or olfactory placode

In the sixth week of development, the center of each nasal placode (or olfactory placode) grows inwards to form the two nasal pits. The invaginations give rise to the olfactory epithelium that lines the roof of the nasal cavity. Illustration by Henry Vandyke Carter (1831-1897.) (Source: Gray H.
