High-dose intravenous immune globulin (IVIG) has been used for the treatment of autoimmune disorders since 1981, starting with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. IVIG is a safe and effective therapy for Guillain-Barré syndrome, but some cases may not respond to it or may get worse. IVIG is the preferred first-line treatment for chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy and an adjunctive therapy for myasthenia gravis where no other therapy is effective.

Periodic limb movements are repetitive flexion movements of the toes, ankles, knees, and hips, sometimes the upper limbs too, lasting from 0.5 to 10 seconds that recur primarily in stage N1 and stage N2 of sleep with a periodicity ranging from 10 to 90 seconds. Though representing an almost obligate accompaniment of restless legs syndrome and frequently associated with various neurologic and physical diseases, they are also widely prevalent among the general population.

Episodes of periodic paralysis typically involve generalized muscle weakness with hypotonia and areflexia but spare bulbar and respiratory muscles and cognition. During attacks, affected muscles are in a state of sustained depolarization and are electrically inexcitable. Attacks may last minutes, hours, or even days. Episodes are often precipitated by specific triggers (behavior/diet) or are associated with abnormal serum potassium levels.
