Subcortical band heterotopia (gross specimen from an adult patient)

The pathological abnormality in subcortical band heterotopia is characterized by 2 layers of gray matter (arrows). The outer cortex appears normal, grossly and microscopically. A subcortical heterotopic layer of neurons in the subcortical white matter (inner arrow) does not extend into the gyri of the outer cortex. (Contributed by Dr. Joseph Gleeson.)
