Intracranial arterial segment types

The various segments of the intracranial internal carotid artery are illustrated, emphasizing the surrounding microenvironment, their presence proximal or distal to the Circle of Willis, and the presence of branching. Note the overlap marked by the arrow. This is a segment that may be either proximal or distal to the major collaterals, depending on the point of juncture of the posterior communicating artery. In addition, its branching pattern may change depending on the configuration of the anterior choroidal artery. (Contributed by Dr. Camilo Gomez.)
