Pituitary adenomas show expansion of monomorphic cells in an acinar pattern reminiscent of normal pituitary gland. Adenomas can be categorized by the pituitary hormone that is overproduced, and they can be classified into eosinophilic (over-secrete prolactin or GH), basophilic (over-secrete ACTH, LH, FSH, or TSH), or chromophobic (nonsecretory) on H&E staining. Differentiation of the hormone produced is currently carried out by immunohistochemistry. (Contributed by Dr. Jason A Heth.)
