German ophthalmologist Friedrich Wilhelm Ernst Albrecht von Gräfe (often Anglicized to Graefe; 1828-1870) described von Graefe sign, a dynamic phenomenon in which the descent of the eyelid is retarded during eye movements from primary position to downgaze.
