Chest expansion test in a woman with ankylosing spondylitis

The chest expansion test is used to quantify the flexibility of the rib cage. A circumferential measurement is made at the level of the fourth intercostal space at maximum inspiration and at maximum expiration. The difference between these measurements is then compared to standardized norms adjusted for age and sex. (Contributed by Dr. Walter Carlini.)
