Coronal section of the brain, passing posterior to the insula, and through the extreme posterior end of the superior temporal gyrus. (Left side) On the left side, the lower surface of the superior temporal gyrus shows that the narrow strip of cortex is absent. The upper surface of the superior temporal gyrus is destroyed together with a considerable portion of the center of the convolution. The deep fiber area of the lobe is pale, showing great diminution in fibers, and a triangular area of fiber degeneration, in which are a few small cyst-like extensions of the softening, which pass inward, cutting through the sagittal strata near the ventricle. (Right side) On the right side, the superior temporal gyrus is involved only at the extreme inner portion of its ventral surface. The cortex of the inner half of the dorsal surface of the superior temporal gyrus is destroyed, and nearly all of the fibers of the center of the convolution. The degeneration in the deep fiber areas of the lobe is much the same as on the left side. (From: Barrett A. A case of pure word-deafness with autopsy. J Nerv Ment Dis 1910;37[2]:85.)
