Gherman Titov, Nikita Khrushchev, and Yuri Gagarin on the Red Square in Moscow

From left to right: Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Stepanovich Titov (1935-2000); Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev (1894-1971), First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union; and Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin (1934-1968). Gagarin had been the first human to journey into outer space: traveling in the Vostok 1 capsule, Gagarin completed one orbit of Earth on April 12, 1961. Titov became the second human to orbit Earth on August 6, 1961, aboard Vostok 2. Titov is also remembered as the first person to suffer significant space sickness (space orientation syndrome).
