Nostrum Menace Cartoon (1905)

Enlarged detail. This cartoon heralded the 1905 exposé of the nostrum menace, “The Great American Fraud” by American journalist and muckraker Samuel Hopkins Adams (1871-1958). A skeletal Death figure in the nasal cavity is controlling a tube from a barrel in the left orbital socket labeled "CHEAP POISONOUS ALCOHOL"--an indicator of methanol adulteration of substitution for ethanol. The tube from the right orbital socket is labeled "LAUDANUM"--ie, tincture of opium. (Source: Courtesy of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Public domain.)
