Usher syndrome

The retinitis pigmentosa associated with Usher syndrome does not differ in clinical appearance from other forms of retinitis pigmentosa, and like all instances of retinitis pigmentosa, the appearance can vary widely depending on time since onset, retinal pigmentation, etc. Other causes (eg, inflammatory or infectious) also can produce pigmentation that may resemble the appearance of retinitis pigmentosa (pseudo retinitis pigmentosa). Family history, visual field testing, and an electroretinogram are often necessary to support a diagnosis based solely on clinical appearance. (Contributed by Dr. Rosa Tang.)
