Carotid artery stenting basics

(A) A high-grade internal carotid artery stenosis is identified angiographically. (B) The guide catheter has been advanced with its tip immediately proximal to the lesion, and a distal embolic protection device (arrow) has been deployed in the cervical segment of the internal carotid artery. (C) Following stent deployment, post-dilation, and removal of the embolic protection device, it is clear that the stenosis has been corrected. The elapsed time between (A) and (C) approximates 15 to 20 minutes. (Contributed by Dr. Camilo Gomez.)
