Ordinates represent percentages of the average values obtained before ascending the Peak (Oxford and Colorado Springs) on the particular subject. The continuous thick line represents the total oxygen capacity or total amount of hemoglobin. The continuous thin line represents the percentage of hemoglobin. The interrupted line represents blood volume. The values for Douglas and Haldane in Oxford before the start of the expedition are plotted without relation to time. The values for Henderson and Schneider were similar but were limited to the time of the expedition in Colorado. (Source: Douglas CG, Haldane JS, Henderson Y, Schneider EC. Physiological observations made on Pike's Peak, Colorado, with special reference to adaptation to low barometric pressures. Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Series A 1913;203:185-318.)
