Neuropathological inspection of postmortem material from ALS-FTLD patients revealed different aspects of astrocyte involvement, namely, (1) inflammation, (2) inclusion body formation, and (3) atrophy or degeneration. Whether these phenotypes correspond to different moments along a continuous timeline or whether they rather affect distinct subpopulations of astrocytes deserves further investigation.
