German pathologist Friedrich Daniel von Recklinghausen (1833-1910) is most known for his monograph in 1882 (Über die multiplen Fibrome der Haut und ihre Beziehung zu den multiplen Neuromen) in which he reviewed previous literature and characterized the tumors of neurofibromatosis type I as neurofibromas.
