Neural tube defect rates per 10,000 population, by race/ethnicity and fortification period status. Data from 25 population-based birth defect programs. In 1996, Food and Drug Administration established regulations requiring fortification with 140 μg folic acid/100 g of all standardized enriched cereal grain products sold in the United States by 1998.
